Dormice in Dorset – the importance of hedges and scrub

The Dormouse Muscardinus avellanarius is a native British mammal, found mainly in southern Britain. This distribution seems largely determined by climate (Bright & Morris 1996). Over the past few decades it appears to have decreased in abundance and become extinct in many areas, especially in the north of its range (Bright & Morris 1993; Bright et al. 1996b).
